Helping Our Wounded Warriors to Heal

To honor and empower wounded warriors.

Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) began when several individuals took small, inspired actions to help others in need. One night while watching the evening news, a group of veterans and brothers were moved by the difficult stories of the first wounded service members returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq. They realized then and there that something needed to be done for these brave individuals beyond brass bands and ticker tape parades

They wanted to provide tangible support for the severely wounded to help them on the road to heal both physically and mentally. What they viewed as a small contribution compared with what the warriors had sacrificed, is now WWP’s signature program; WWP backpacks delivered bedside to wounded warriors. Over time, WWP’s programs and services have evolved to provide a full range of support from the first days after injury to a warrior’s transition into civilian life and beyond.

The WWP works to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.

What does the Wounded Warrior Project want you to know? We need to do more for these brave individuals, beyond the brass bands and ticker tape parades.

A Father Shows The Way

When it comes to his daughter, there’s no shame in his game!

Not only is this a wonder public service announcement, it’s a great message and example of how the relationship between a Father and his children should be...innately and without effort.

The NRFC serves as a central source for the public to learn more about the importance of Responsible Fatherhood and fatherhood issues.

The NRFC promotes and supports Responsible Fatherhood in an effort to advance the fatherhood movement, and support fathers and families. The long-term goals of the NRFC are to have its efforts help support the emergence of more well-functioning, economically independent families and stronger communities in line with the long term-goals of OFA—family self sufficiency and economic independence.

NRFC Activities
The primary objectives of the NRFC are to:

  • Promote responsible, caring, and effective parenting
  • Enhance the abilities and commitment of unemployed or low-income fathers to provide material support for their families and to avoid or leave welfare programs
  • Improve fathers' ability to effectively manage family business affairs
  • Encourage and support healthy marriages and married fatherhood

Before A Child Is Sexually Abused, Stop It Now!

Stop It Now!, using a combination of research-based public education materials and social marketing campaigns, seeks to change the social climate and foster the prevention of child sexual abuse. They do so by mobilizing adults, families and communities to take actions that protect children before they are harmed. Their programs work to move beyond just addressing the impact of child sexual abuse to seek out the root causes and identify ways to prevent abuse before a child is harmed.

What’s the impact of child abuse?
Increased likelihood of depression, substance abuse, sexually transmitted disease, promiscuous behavior, criminal behavior, and difficulties in adult relationships have all been associated with victims of Child Sexual Abuse. One study found that 80% of children who have been sexually abused have some symptoms of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).

Stop It Now! believes the best hope for preventing child abuse is by enacting the following policies in each community:

  • Promote accurate information
  • Enhance services to children who are victims of sex abuse
  • Provide specialized treatment programs for sex offenders
  • Offer timely sexuality education
  • Improve our understanding of behaviors that make children vulnerable

What does Stop It Now! want you to know? They believe sexual abuse of children is preventable and that all adults should take full responsibility for stopping sexual abuse of a child.

Granting A Wish Every 40 Minutes

The Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded in 1980 after a little boy named Chris Greicius realized his heartfelt wish to become a police officer. Since its humble beginnings, the organization has blossomed into a global phenomenon, enriching the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions, reaching more than 185,000 children around the world.

A wish experience is frequently a source of inspiration for children undergoing difficult medical treatments and a positive force that helps them overcome their obstacles. A wish experience is often more than a dream come true: It’s the catalyst that rekindles their belief in themselves and the promise of their future.

What does the Make-A-Wish Foundation want you to know? Their wish granters create an unforgettable experience driven by the child’s creativity. It’s an incredible experience that enriches not just the lives of the children and their families, but often an entire community.

350 is the Most Important Number in the World

350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisisthe solutions that science and justice demand.

Their mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis—to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.

Their focus is on the number 350as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 is more than a numberit's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet.

To tackle climate change we need to move quickly, and we need to act in unison—and 2009 will be an absolutely crucial year. This December, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark to craft a new global treaty on cutting emissions. The problem is, the treaty currently on the table doesn't meet the severity of the climate crisis—it doesn't pass the 350 test.

In order to unite the public, media, and our political leaders behind the 350 goal, they harnessed the power of the internet to coordinate a planetary day of action on October 24, 2009.  They held actions at hundreds of iconic places around the worldfrom the Taj Mahal to the Great Barrier Reef - and clear message to world leaders: the solutions to climate change must be equitable, they must be grounded in science, and they must meet the scale of the crisis.

What does 350.org want you to know? 350 is the most important number in the world. This number is the safe line for our global climate and a start line for a global movement. Join 350.org to take action in your community, engage our world's leaders, and build an international movement to solve the climate crisis.

The above photo, posted on flickr.com, was one of over 5,200 events happening around the world as part of the 350.org International Day of Climate Action on October 24, 2009. To see more spectacular images, just click on the photo.

Making a Lifelong Difference for Children

Today, approximately 780,000 children in the US are caught up in the court and child welfare maze because they are unable to live safely at home. Imagine what it would be like to lose your parents, not because of something you did, but because they can’t—or won’t—take care of you. Now, into these children’s lives come dozens of strangers: police, foster parents, therapists, social workers, judges, lawyers, and more. Hopefully, one of these strangers is a CASA volunteer.

CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children, to make sure they don’t get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish in an inappropriate group or foster home. They stay with each case until it is closed, and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence—the one adult who cares only for them.

Last year, more than 68,000 CASA volunteers served more than 240,000 abused and neglected children through 1,018 program offices. CASA volunteers have helped more than two million abused children since the first program was established in 1977.

A Beacon of Light in a Parent's Darkest Night

St. Jude is a legendary hub of achievement and accomplishment. They were the first to cure the most common form of childhood leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), helping to drive the cure rate from 4 percent in 1962 to 94 percent today.

They’ve recently pioneered a unique procedure allowing children to receive a life-saving bone marrow transplant from a parent without an exact marrow match. They are the only pediatric health facility in the world to build their own on-site facility to manufacture highly specialized life-saving highly specialized medicines and vaccines.

Here are just a few of their achievements and accomplishments:
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance. No child is denied treatment because of a family’s inability to pay.

They are the only pediatric research center with an on-site Good Manufacturing Practices facility to research and produce highly specialized medicines and vaccines that pharmaceutical companies do not produce.

St. Jude was the first pediatric cancer research center to develop treatment that proved effective in raising the survival rate to more than 50 percent of patients with neuroblastoma, the second most common solid tumor in children.

What does the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital want you to know? There’s no place like St. Jude.
